Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity some time ago. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower measured about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US producing 49% of it. As of Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had reached about $750M, and the total for 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has run into at least one of the five Romance reel shorts names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, all five seem identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch depend on how they differ underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. We put them through six rounds, naming a winner in each, and drew on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Side-by-Side Comparison Grid

The table below puts the full field on one screen before the rounds start. Prices track the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Media Partners Asia estimates the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source released the figure, the cell says “not reported”. Use the grid as the scoreboard and read the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it still carries the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. Per MPA estimates, its 2025 revenue came to $785M, with $1.05B forecast for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and commands about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were even at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, even though in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. Operating from Hong Kong, ShortMax appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this field, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Price

Nowhere else do the apps look as alike. On the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer a weekly pass at roughly $19.99, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99 is the standout, as it is the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin. The number on your screen may differ, since prices change by country, platform and promotion.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

The marketing gets loud and the details get thin when it comes to free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog says the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, though the app has free options too. Round winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

Screens are where these apps genuinely diverge. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. The ShortMax domain redirects to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence consists of its iOS and Android apps. ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama has one for tvOS 18 or later, and that is its trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Round winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama claims the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

When it comes to raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. More than 80% of the newly released content on DramaWave is AI-generated, reports say, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort comes out ahead, with The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox responds with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama boasts the most interesting pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

DramaWave easily wins this round. Its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk for viewers who move between phone and laptop. The fine print merits a look too, since it varies more than the prices do. Whichever app you use, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings rather than deleting it, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Under ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, while My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave, by a distance.

Best For: The Final Verdict

The best choice depends on how you watch, since no single short drama app takes every round. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Being the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. On sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, as it was ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if you are tempted by all five.
